Life wakes us up by continually throwing us “out of thenest”. Reality is continuously challenging our deeply held beliefs, expectations, and assumptions… foiling even our best anti inflammatories laid plans. It’s in the moments of greatest uncertainty that we can get contracted in our fear or practice waking up to more possibility.
I am so grateful for this hatha yoga practice which gives me the space, time, and attention to literally feel my feet on the ground in the most challenging moments. This is one of the simplest and most tangible ways I know of to get grounded:
The next time you are feeling completely unhinged,the next time your best laid plans fall apart, the next time life throws you out of the nest… PAUSE.
Bring your attention to your feet. Notice the four corners of each foot. Let your bodyweight release into the four corners of both feet evenly. Have the sense that you are breathing all the way to your feet. Noticing the stability of the earth beneath you, continue to deepen your breath for a few moments.
In the midst of groundlessness, we are supported by the ground beneath us. Shams of Tabriz says, “the seat of the soul is beneath your feet.” Taking just a few seconds to feel that support and breathe into it helps us stay present and fly more easefully, skillfully, and willingly towards the next adventure…
